Off-Grid Rustic Home Built in the Ozark Hills
This unique project represents a return to traditional Ozark living, blending craftsmanship, self-sufficiency, and regional heritage into a fully off-grid home nestled in the woods between Competition, Hartville, and Norwood. While our work typically focuses on modern home construction, this build honors the lifestyle of earlier generations who lived simply and resourcefully in the Ozark hills.
The home is constructed using locally milled lumber and cedar poles harvested directly from the property, ensuring the structure blends naturally into its surroundings. Salvaged doors and windows were carefully incorporated to preserve a rustic aesthetic and give new life to materials with history and character. Every design decision was made with intention, prioritizing durability, authenticity, and respect for traditional building methods.
Designed for complete off-grid living, the home features a Pioneer Maid wood cookstove that serves as both the primary cooking appliance and heat source. Water is drawn from a hand pump located in the yard, and facilities include an Ozark-style outhouse, reflecting time-tested solutions that sustained families in this region for generations.
Building this home has been an incredibly meaningful experience—one rooted in craftsmanship, heritage, and a deep connection to the land. This project stands as a testament to the enduring practicality and beauty of traditional Ozark construction and the timeless appeal of living simply, intentionally, and in harmony with nature.
